Introduction
My personal philosophy of education is to facilitate learning and growth academically, personally and ethically. The purpose of education within this framework is to provide students with the tools required for success in life. In discussing my personal philosophy of education, I will elaborate on the aim of education, address the role of the teacher and the learner and explain the method of classroom practices. Justification of my personal philosophy will be provided with references to four theorists – Dr Maria Montesorri, John Dewey, Yong Zhao, and Sir Ken Robinson. It will also be demonstrated that my personal philosophy is in contrast to Paulo Friere and Alex Sutherland Neill.
Aim of Education
The aim of education is to provide an individual a unique experience, providing them with a secure, caring and stimulating environment, encouraging students to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically and mentally. This environment will lay the foundations facilitating individuals to become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners equipped to enter the society as critical thinkers, work collaboratively and act audaciously – a skill set for the 21st century.
Education profoundly affects the lives of many people as did John Dewey (1859-1952) who was the most prominent of progressive educators. Dewey stated ‘Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not a preparation for life: education is for life itself’ (Johnson & Reed, 2008). Dewey advocated a naturalistic approach to learning, he claimed students learnt by interacting within the environment while setting goals, completing projects, engaging in problem-solving, and using inquiry. ... endorsing independence in the learning environment and suggests all students should have some freedom of choice (Gutek, 2001). Alex Sutherland Neill (1883-1973) opposes this theory; Neill believed children should have full freedom and total independence (Neill, 1964). His methods permit students to have full freedom, allowing students to make decisions whether to attend classes or not. Montesorri expressed education is more than classroom and assessments, she alleged when children were permitted some freedom and were active participants within the environment they would naturally make mistakes and often those mistakes were a critical part of the learning process. My philosophy concurs with Montesorri as a child given too much freedom may experience negative influences in their development and allowing a limited amount of freedom will aide students in self-discovery.
